🥰 Why You Will Love This Recipe?
- This is a quick recipe. As we are using the pastry dough, the only thing we should do is make the filling and the cream cheese.
- We will use simple ingredients you can easily find in any store near you.
- It is healthier than store-bought because you can adjust the ingredients used for this recipe.
- You can make just a few pieces just to quench your appetite.
- The texture of the cinnamon rolls, in combination with the sweet cream cheese is absolutely delish and will make you ask for more.
- You don’t need to remove the basket half of the time to flip the ingredients.
- As we will cook at a lower temperature, you don’t need to stress about the possibility of burning the cinnamon rolls. You will get, in the end, a nice browned cinnamon roll.
🏆 Tips for Success? How to Make It Better?
Cook the cinnamon rolls at a lower temperature, like 300°F (150°C). This will allow you to avoid burning the top of the cinnamon rolls.
🥘 Ingredients Needed for This Recipe?
For the Dough:
- 1 pound of store-bought Puff Pastry.
For the Filling:
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 4 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of orange zest
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
- Optionally, Dried or fresh orange zest or an extra flavor
For the Cream:
- 1 cup of cream cheese
- 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
🥦 Ingredients Swap?
- Brown Sugar. You can replace it with white sugar. Both of them are working fine for this recipe.
- Cream Cheese. Either brick-style (US) or spreadable (UK) will work fine for this recipe. If you use brick-style cream cheese, leave it at room temperature for about 30 minutes. This will make it softer and easier to mix with the ingredients.
Make it Your Own!
If you want a more special taste, do not hesitate to experiment by adding a few additional ingredients. For example, besides the original recipe, I added dried orange zest.
An interesting idea for spice lovers would be adding cardamom, anise, and cloves to get a taste that will remind you of the winter holidays.
Or, why not use apple jam with cinnamon rolls? You can’t go wrong with the combination of apple and cinnamon.
👩🍳 Instructions:
Take a bowl and put in it the sugar, butter, and cinnamon, and if you want to offer a more special taste, consider adding your “secret ingredient” that we just talked about before. I added a little bit of orange zest to this mix. Mix well all the ingredients to obtain a uniform composition.
After you prepare the filling, spread a sheet of parchment paper on a clean and plain surface. We are doing that to avoid sticking the dough to the table.
After that, roll over the dough evenly, and with a tablespoon, spread the sugar-cinnamon mixture evenly.
Right after that, roll the dough tightly on the long side to form a tube. Cut the dough into similar-sized slices about 1″ thick.
After that, place them in the air fryer basket, but consider that when you bake them, they will increase in size, so leave some space between the slices. If you can’t fit all the pieces, cook them in a few batches for the best results.
Set the timer for about 25 minutes at 300°F (150°C) and let them bake. In the meantime, we will make the cream to cover the cinnamon rolls.
Quick note: Why is the temperature so low? Why not set it to 375°F? 400°F? I tried before making them at a higher temperature, and I can say: Yes, you will shorten the time, but you will always need to look at the air fryer basket not to burn the cinnamon slices. You will also need to cover the cinnamon rolls with aluminum foil to avoid burning the top while the bottom side is still cooking.
So, after a few experiments, I found that it would be easier to reduce the temperature and wait a little bit more time but have more freedom instead. So, if you want a nice, evenly golden color without many headaches, consider cooking the cinnamon rolls for longer at a lower temperature.
To make the cream, take another bowl, and pour the cream cheese, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar. Mix well all the ingredients, and the cream is done. I told you this is a very simple recipe.
In the end, you should obtain good-looking golden brown cinnamon rolls that will have a nice crunchy texture.
Quick note: Please take into consideration that not all of the air fryers are working the same. The functions and how they cook may differ from one manufacturer to another. Because of that, in the last minutes, check how browned the cinnamon rolls and if needed, adjust the timer to make them perfect in your air fryer. For this recipe, I used the Cosori Air Fryer 5.8QT.
Remove the cinnamon rolls from the air fryer basket and put them on a plate. Cover the cinnamon rolls on top with cream cheese that we did just a little earlier, and for an extra taste and texture, you can sparkle a few more orange zest. Optionally, you can serve them with a few leaves of fresh mint for extra freshness.
♻️ Make Ahead, Storage and Heating:
Can I Prepare It Ahead of Time?
If you need to prepare the cinnamon rolls ahead, you can follow all the steps except the baking step and keep the rolls in the fridge for up to 3 days. When needed, place the cinnamon rolls in the air fryer basket and bake them for about 25 minutes at 300°F (150°C).
How to Store the Cinnamon Rolls in the Fridge?
Let them cool down completely, and put them in a well-closed container, and you can store them in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Can You Freeze Air Fryer the Cinnamon Rolls?
Yes, wait until the cinnamon rolls cool down; put them in a well-closed container, and you can keep them in the freezer for up to 3 months.
How to Reheat Them?
If you want to heat the cinnamon rolls in the fridge, use a microwave (but they will become softer than they were in the original) and set the timer to 30-45 seconds. Or heat them in the air fryer for about 1-2 minutes at 350°F.
If you plan to heat the frozen cinnamon rolls, put them in the air fryer and cook them for 5-7 minutes. If the cinnamon rolls are still cold, set the timer for another 1-2 minutes.
🤔Answering Your Questions:
Are Cinnamon Rolls Vegan?
Pay attention to the composition of the puff pastry or the dough you decide to use. If you find vegan dough, replace the butter with vegetable margarine. And make the cream based on powdered sugar and lemon juice mixed with water.
Why Do My Cinnamon Rolls Get Hard?
The temperature was too high, and they dried and became hard, or the temperature was too low, and they cooked for too long in the air fryer.
Are Air Fryer Cinnamon Rolls Gluten-Free?
No, because the dough contains wheat flour.
How Long Do You Cook Cinnamon Rolls in an Air Fryer?
About 25 minutes at 300°F (150°C). This will allow you to avoid burning the cinnamon rolls on top of them.
How to Make Cinnamon Rolls Without Yeast?
It all depends on the type of dough that you will choose. If you want to make cinnamon rolls with no yeast, pay attention to the list of ingredients on the puff pastry. You can pick one that is without yeast. Consider that the cinnamon rolls will be crumbly if you use the puff pastry with no yeast.
Can You Make the Air Fryer Cinnamon Rolls in the Oven?
Yes. You can make the same air fryer cinnamon rolls in the oven. Set the oven temperature at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes. Take note that if you see that after 10-15 minutes, the cinnamon rolls will start to brown too much, covering loosely with aluminum foil. This will allow us to cook them enough on the bottom side without burning the top side.

Notes
- Use lower temperatures to avoid browning the top of the cinnamon rolls too quickly and burning them.
- If you are pressed by time and need to make them as soon as possible, you can bake them at a high temperature and on a lower timer, but you will need to check them from time to time.
- When you see that the top of the cinnamon rolls tops are browned enough, but the bottom still needs a few more minutes to bake, take an aluminum foil and cover the rolls. This will stop the cinnamon rolls from burning on the top side.
