Just imagine, a pack of frozen mince, a few vegetables or beans, and your delicious dinner is ready. It is a game saver on a busy day. You can keep this combination in your fridge and you always can prepare a quick and delicious dinner.
As mince is a cheap ingredient and it is very versatile, you can make a lot of dishes from it.
It freezes very well and you can keep it all the time in your freezer. But can you cook the mince directly from frozen? Or do you need to thaw it first?
When you’re trying to cook meat directly from frozen, there are a few things that you should keep in mind.
You can have different types of mince like beef, chicken, pork, lamb, turkey, or a mix between those types of meat.
If you have a big piece of frozen mince, it is not recommended to cook it directly on high heat because you may get cooked meat on the edges, but in the center, the mince will remain raw.
To avoid that, I recommend putting the mince on the pan on low heat and gently moving it around from time to time until it will thaw and separate completely.
After that, you can increase the temperature and cook it as you plan.
By thawing it first on the stove, you will get a better result in the end.
If you don’t want to cook it first, if you have time, I recommend putting it on a plate and letting it thaw slowly in the fridge overnight.
Another way is to defrost the mince under hot water. More on that, later.
Can I Cook Frozen Mince Without Defrosting?
If you don’t need to give a form to the mince like when cooking patties, then sure, you can cook the mince directly from frozen.
Just pop it in a pan and start cooking slowly on low heat until it will thaw and separate. After that, you can increase the heat, add the rest of the ingredients and cook as usual.
Should You Defrost It First?
If you want to prepare a delicious mince and tatties for example, then sure, you can cook the ground beef or other mince directly from frozen, but if you want to make some delicious patties then you will need to defrost the mince firstly because you can’t give a form to the patties while the mince is still frozen.
Because of that, you may be looking for the best methods to defrost the mince. When we are talking about defrosting food, usually are used one of these methods:
- Defrosting the fridge overnight
- Defrosting in the microwave
- Defrosting on a pan, during cooking
- Defrosting in cold water
- Defrosting on the table at the room temperature
But can you use all these methods when we are talking about mince? Not all of these methods are good for defrosting mince. Let’s find which of them may ruin your mince.
Defrosting at Room Temperature
First of all, I don’t recommend defrosting the mince at room temperature because the meat will sit for too long on the table and a lot of bacteria will form on the mince and inside of it. So, with this method, we will skip this method from the beginning.
Defrosting in the Microwave
If you try to defrost the mince in the microwave and you have a big chunk of mince, you may risk that the mince on the edges will start cooking before all the mince in the center will defrost.
Quick Note: By defrosting the mince in the microwave, you will lose the texture of the meat because we will speed up the thawing process.
Attention! Once the mince was defrosted in the microwave, you should immediately start the cooking process, otherwise, you may risk growing different bacteria on the mince.
How to Defrost Mince in the Microwave?
If you need to thaw only a small quantity of mince, then you can defrost it in the microwave. For that, put the mince on a microwave-safe plate and choose the defrosting option (or 1/2 or even better 1/3 from its power) on your microwave.
Set the timer for about 2-3 minutes and every 30-45 seconds, remove the mince from the microwave and flip on another side to make sure that the mice will thaw evenly.
Quick Note: If you have a bigger quantity of mince, I will recommend opting for another method to defrost.
Defrosting in the Fridge
The best method to defrost the mince will be to leave the meat in the fridge overnight, or at least for 6 hours. Because the mince will thaw slowly and at a lower temperature, you will avoid forming bacteria.
The only downside of this method is that it requires a lot of time. If you need to prepare something quick, this will not work for you.
Pro Tip: If you’re in a hurry, you can hurry the process by putting the frozen mince on the top shelf of the fridge as on the top shelf of the fridge the temperature is higher (because the hot air is lighter and it gets up. Yes, even in the fridge).
But even on the top shelf, you will need to wait at least 4-5 hours. It can be a game-changer for you if you will put the mince in the morning, you can have the thawed mince for dinner.
If the mince will be frozen in a thin layer, then you may be lucky enough to have it thawed for lunch.
Defrosting Under Hot Water
Defrosting the mince under hot water can be the optimal variant if you don’t want to avoid cooking the mince in the microwave or even on the stove.
Just put the mice in a zip lock bag, seal it well, and put the mince on a plate with hot water.
Quick Note: Keep in mind as we speed up the thawing process, we will use a little bit from the texture of the mince.
This happens all the time when we don’t let the food defrost slowly. But when you need to cook something quick and don’t have the time to let it thaw slowly in the fridge, this method will be a game-changer for you.
Usually, thawing the mice in the hot water will take you about 30 minutes.
Attention! As you thawed the frozen mince under hot water, and you increased the temperature of the mince, you need to cook the mince immediately! Otherwise, you may risk forming and growing bacteria on the ground mince.
The more you will leave the thawed mince, the more bacteria will form on it.

Usually, when you’re buying in a bigger quantity, you will get a better price for your ingredients.

As mince is a very versatile ingredient, and you can prepare a lot of dishes from it, it will be a great idea to have an air-tight container with frozen mince in your freezer.
