Can You Fry Frozen Prawns?
Yes! You Can fry the prawns while they are still frozen and they can save you a little bit of your time. Also, by cooking the prawns or shrimp directly from frozen, you are eliminating the risk of growing bacteria on them.
If you will cook them directly from frozen, make sure to stir them continuously to make sure that they will be cooked evenly on all sides.
If you miss my recipe for frozen shrimp in the air fryer, then I highly recommend giving it a try!
Quick Note: For the best results, I recommend thawing them in cold water, it will take you 10 minutes more, but you will get better results.
Needed Items for Freezing:
What Happens if You Cook Them From Frozen?
If you will start cooking them directly from the freezer on high heat you may risk overcooking them on the edges or undercooking them in the middle because there will be a difference in the temperature.
Because of that, if you plan to cook the prawns directly from the freezer, start slowly.
Cook them on low heat for a few minutes until they will defrost on the stove.
Do You Need to Defrost Them Before Cooking?
Defrosting in The Microwave
It is not recommended to thaw the prawns or shrimp in the microwave as it is very easy to start the cooking process. As a result, you will have cooked edges and a raw interior.
Quick Note: When you are forcing food to defrost, you will always lose some of its texture.
If you don’t have time to let the frozen prawns overnight defrost in the fridge, then the best option for you is to put them in cold water.
Defrosting Them in Cold Water
Quick Note: You should use cold water. If you use warm or even hot water, you may start the cooking process and later, the prawns will not cook evenly.
This method should take you 10-20 minutes depending on the number of prawns and their size.
Pro Tip: If you want to defrost the prawns quicker, then add 1 tablespoon of salt for every 2 cups of cold water. The salted water increases the temperature quicker and you can defrost prawns quickly.
Also, the added salt to the water will make the prawns, in the end, juicier and salt will accentuate their flavor.
Quick Note: If you will use this method, make sure that later you will adjust the salt in the dish as the prawns will be already salted.
Attention! You must cook the prawns immediately after you thaw them to avoid growing bacteria on them.
Defrosting Prawns in Running Water
I saw others prefer to thaw the frozen prawns in running water and mix them continuously.
On one side, the thawing process will be a little bit shorter, but you need to be present in this process in comparison with the previous variant where you should just let the frozen prawns in water.
For me, it is better to leave the prawns to defrost on their own so I can prepare other ingredients for the recipe. But if you need to defrost the prawns or shrimp as soon as possible, you can use this method.
Quick Note: Another downside of this method is that you will use a lot more water in comparison with the previous method.
Defrosting Them in the Fridge
The best method to defrost the prawns and most used in restaurants is defrosting the prawns in the fridge overnight.
It is great when we are planning our meals ahead of time. But how many of us do that? If you’re one of those persons, lucky you! You will get the best texture from your frozen prawns.
To defrost the prawns or shrimp in the fridge, put them in a bowl and leave them overnight thawing slowly in the fridge.
By defrosting prawns slowly in the fridge, you will keep their thin texture.
Attention! Don’t refreeze the defrosted prawns! You can move them back to the freezer only if you cook them. Otherwise, you risk growing bacteria on prawns.
Pro Tip: If you want to hurry up the process, you can put the shrimp on the top shelf in the fridge as on the top shelf the temperature is higher because the hot air always rises up.
What Method I’m Using to Defrost the Prawns?
Usually, when I’m cooking the prawns or shrimp, I defrost them in salt water or cook them directly from frozen on low heat.
