🥘 Ingredients and Substitutes

Onions, ketchup, tomato paste, butter and sweet sour sauce on a table.
  • Butter. I used butter to saute the onions and give them a creamier texture. If you want, you can replace the butter with the frying oil you prefer to use.
  • Onions. I used a mix of red and yellow onions, but you could use any type of onion you have or prefer.
  • Tomato Paste. I used tomato paste because I had it in my pantry, but you can replace it with canned tomatoes or fresh tomatoes if they are in the season.
  • Ketchup. I used spicy ketchup. If you don’t have it at hand, you could use regular ketchup or another tomato-based sauce.
  • Sweet Sour Sauce. I used a homemade sweet-sour sauce, but you can use any store-bought alternatives if you’re limited on time. Or, as an alternative, you can substitute the sweet-sour sauce with 1 ½ tablespoons of honey and ½ of vinegar.
  • Water. You will need a little bit of warm water if you want to adjust the consistency of the sauce.

Optionally, if you prefer it spicier, consider adding a little bit of red pepper chili flakes.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions

  • Most often, these onions in red sauce are used as a topping. The tender onions and flavorful sauce make a great topping for burgers, hot dogs, or sandwiches. Try adding it to a grilled cheese sandwich or topping a baked potato with it.
  • Serve the onions in red sauce as a dip. The sweet and tangy sauce makes a great dip for vegetables or crackers. Serve it alongside a platter of raw vegetables or a bowl of crispy tortilla chips for a tasty snack.
  • You may consider serving it as a side dish because it pairs well with a variety of main courses. Serve it alongside grilled chicken, steak, or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
  • Serve these onions in red sauce over a bed of rice for a simple and satisfying meal. Add some grilled shrimp or chicken to the dish for some extra protein.

🏆 Expert Tips. What to Pay Attention To?

  • Slice the onions evenly to get a uniform texture and cooking level of them.
  • Cook the onions until they are soft: The onions should be cooked until they are soft and translucent but not browned. Cooking them too long or at too high a heat can cause them to burn or turn bitter.
  • Adjust the sweetness and tanginess: The sweetness and tanginess of the sauce can be adjusted to taste. Add more sweet and sour sauce or ketchup if you prefer a sweeter sauce. If you prefer a tangier sauce, add more tomato paste.
  • Since this recipe contains acidic ingredients like tomato paste and ketchup, it’s important to use a non-reactive saucepan such as stainless steel or non-stick to prevent a metallic taste. Also, if you have a white saucepan, consider using a different one, as this sauce may color your saucepan.
  • For an extra burst of flavor, try adding some fresh herbs such as parsley or basil to the dish. These herbs complement the sweet and tangy flavors of the sauce and add a bright, fresh note to the dish.

🤔 Answering Your Questions

What Onions Are Best for Red Sauce?

You can use white, red, or yellow onions as they have a high sugar content and caramelize nicely. Also, you will get a different flavor profile using different types of onions.

Can You Store Them for Later?

Yes, wait until the onions in the red sauce cool down, then move them to an air-tight container and keep them safe in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.

What is the best way to reheat them?

You can reheat them in the microwave oven if you’re limited on time; however, if you want to control the heat level and reheat them evenly, I recommend reheating them on the stove in a saucepan. Don’t forget to mix them from time to time to avoid sticking the onions to the bottom of the pan.
