If you want to reheat boiled leftover potatoes and they already are of different sizes, you may consider cutting them into similar-sized chunks that will allow them to reheat evenly.
Why Do You Need to Boil the Potatoes Beforehand?
If you are limited on time like you have small kids in your house or you have a ton of tasks at work, you may know how handy it may be to have in your kitchen half prep meals that you can use to prepare something delicious in less than 30 minutes.

The most important is to not over boil them because when you will reheat them the second time, the boiled potatoes will cook more and you may risk overcooking the potatoes and they will become mushy.
So, if you plan to reheat and use later the potatoes, pay attention to the initial boiling time to not too over boil the potatoes.
How to Store Properly the Boiled Potatoes?
Wait until the boiled potatoes will cool down and move them in an air-tight container or in zip bags. After that, you can keep safely the boiled potatoes for 3-4 days in the fridge.
Keep in mind that the longer you will keep the potatoes, the less starch they will have and the potatoes will not be so crumbly.
How Long Do Boiled Potatoes Last?
It all depends on how you plan to keep the boiled potatoes. The recommended method is to keep them in the fridge in an air-tight container for up to 4 days.
If you will leave the boiled potatoes on the plate at room temperature, it is not recommended to leave them for more than 2 hours because there is a high risk that different bacteria will start growing up. Especially in the summertime.
If you will decide to freeze the boiled potatoes, I will recommend keeping them freezer for up to six months. For even better results, no more than 3 months.
So, how do reheat the boiled potatoes? For the quickest method, use the microwave. Next after microwaving, you can reheat the boiled potatoes in the air fryer. If you need to keep the same taste and texture as if you just boiled them, you can steam them. Also, if you need to dry the moisture out of potatoes, you can reheat them in the oven on a baking tray.
So, each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Because of that, let’s get into some more details about how to reheat the boiled potatoes.
Quick Note: While cooking and reheating potatoes, if you need to get an evenly cooked or warmed up, you need to pick all the potatoes of the same size. Otherwise, you may risk that one potato will be cold, and another one will be overcooked.
To avoid that, before you will start boiling them, try to pick the potatoes of the same size. The easiest method to pick them of the same size is to go with the small potatoes.
If you can’t do that, you can cut them into chunks of a similar size.
Reheating in the Microwave
Reheating the boiled potatoes in the microwave may be a great option if you need to reheat a smaller amount of potatoes. If this is your case, then you can save a lot of time because you will need only a few minutes to reheat the potatoes.
For that, put the boiled potatoes in a microwave-safe bowl and cover them with a damp paper towel. Set the preheat option if you have it on your selector, or just set the medium heat level to avoid starting cooking the potatoes.
Pro Tip: If you want to make them juicier, You can add a few pieces of butter over them.
Set the timer to 30 seconds and check if the boiled potatoes were warmed enough in the microwave. If not, repeat this step until you will get the desired temperature.
The only downside of reheating the boiled potatoes in the microwave is if you will use different sized potatoes, you may get some overcooked potatoes while the bigger ones will remain cold on the inside.
Reheating in the Oven
Reheating the boiled potatoes in the oven comes great when you need to reheat a larger amount of boiled potatoes as you may put all of them in the baking tray.
Before you will start arranging the boiled potatoes on a baking tray, set the temperature of your oven to 300°F / 150°C and leave it to preheat.
After that, arrange the boiled potatoes in a single layer on the baking tray.
Quick Note: As I said earlier, for the best results, all the potatoes should be of the same size. If they differ too much in size, then you may consider cutting them into chunks of similar sizes.
Next, to avoid drying out the potatoes, you may grease them with butter or cooking spray and put them in the preheated oven at 300°F / 150°C for about 10-15 minutes depending on the size of your potatoes.
Quick Note: If you will keep them for longer, the boiled potatoes will start baking.
Reheating the boiled potatoes in the oven may be the most time-consuming, but you will also get a more interesting result.
If you’re a happy owner of an air fryer or a steamer, you can use those kitchen tools that will help you with reheating the boiling potatoes.
Reheating in the Air Fryer
Reheating the boiled potatoes in the air fryer will get you a similar result as in the oven but much quicker. Reheating the boiled potatoes in the air fryer may be worth it when you don’t need to reheat a larger quantity of potatoes.
Quick Note: As the air fryer works quickly, there may be a difference of 1-2 minutes between the still cold to overcooked.
First of all, I recommend choosing the preheat option on your air fryer, or if you don’t have it, set the temperature to 300°F/ 150°C and set the timer to 4-5 minutes.
After that sprinkle the air fryer basket with cooking spray and arrange the boiled potatoes in a single layer for an even result.
Return the air fryer basket and set the timer for about 3-5 minutes depending on how many boiled potatoes you plan to reheat or by the size of your potatoes.
If the boiled potatoes that you are trying to reheat are large in size, it will be a good idea if, after half of the time, you will remove the air fryer basket and will shake the air fryer basket to change the position of the boiled potatoes.
After that, return back the air fryer basket and let the air fryer reheat the potatoes for the rest of the time.
Quick Note: If the potatoes that you are trying to reheat are smaller in size, I recommend checking them after 3 minutes if they are warm enough to avoid starting the baking process and forming a crust on the edges.
To avoid forming the crust on the edges, a better option for you may be if you will reheat the potatoes on the steamer.
Reheating in a Steamer
I like reheating the boiled potatoes in a steamer because you will get the same texture and taste as if the potatoes were just boiled.
I put this method in the last place only because not everybody has a steamer in their kitchen.
Quick Note: If you don’t have a steamer, you can make your own improvised steamer. For that, pour in a pan 1/2-1 cup of water and cover this pan with a colander.
Put the potatoes into the steamer and steam them for about 2-5 minutes depending on the size of the potatoes.
What Can You Do With Boiled Potatoes?
Actually a lot of things. You can enjoy them as is, seasoned with salt, pepper, olive oil, and a little bit of chopped dill, or to make a delicious summer salad, potato casseroles, breakfast potatoes, and of course make delicious mashed potatoes from them.
