🥘 Ingredients and Substitutes

  • Ground Turkey provides lean protein and a mild, versatile flavor. Ground chicken or beef can be used for a similar protein boost with different flavor profiles.
  • Zucchini adds moisture and a subtle earthy flavor to the meatballs. Grated carrots or sweet potatoes can provide a similar moisture content and a touch of sweetness.
  • Egg act as a binding agent, helping to hold the meatballs together.
  • Breadcrumbs act as a filler and binder, giving the meatballs their desired texture. Panko breadcrumbs or rolled oats can provide a similar texture while adding a different crunch or nutty flavor.

🍴 Tools Needed:

  • Electric Meat Grinder
  • Baking Dish
  • Ice Cream Scoop

👩‍🍳 Step-by-step Directions

Quick Note: I chose to grind the meat at home, but if you’re confident in the quality of store-bought ground meat, then by all means, use it. It will further simplify the cooking process.

I chose to use a meat grinder, but you can just as easily finely chop the meat and zucchini using a food processor.

White bowl with shredded zucchini, and turkey meat.

Add to the finely chopped meat and zucchinis: one egg, ⅓ cup of breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper to taste.

Mix the mixture thoroughly until it becomes homogeneous.

Take a plate and put about ¼ cup of breadcrumbs on it, which we will need to coat the meatballs.

Pro Tip: Shape the meatballs with oiled hands to prevent the meat from sticking and to create more uniform meatballs.

Quick Note: To achieve uniform-sized meatballs, you can use an ice cream scoop to measure the amount of meat for each meatball.

Shape the meatballs and place them on the plate with breadcrumbs.

Thoroughly coat the meatballs on all sides with breadcrumbs, taking care during this step to avoid distorting the shape of the meatballs.

Take a baking dish and grease it well with oil. Then, arrange the breadcrumb-coated meatballs in it.

Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes.

Remove the meatballs and flip them to the other side. Then, bake for an additional 10 minutes at the same temperature.

Serve the meatballs immediately while they are still warm, as they are now tender on the inside and crispy on the outside.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions

  • Spaghetti and Meatball Extravaganza: Picture this: A steaming plate of al dente spaghetti, lovingly coated in your favorite tomato sauce, topped with a generous helping of our tender Zucchini and Turkey Meatballs. Finish it off with a flurry of grated Parmesan cheese and a sprinkle of fresh basil. Bellissimo! It’s a classic Italian-American feast that’ll transport you straight to Nonna’s kitchen.
  • Sandwich Spectacle: Now, let’s take those meatballs to a whole new level of yum! Grab a fresh sub roll, slather it with garlic aioli, and nestle those meatballs inside. Add some crisp lettuce, juicy tomato slices, and a few slices of provolone cheese. Close it up, and you’ve got yourself a scrumptious meatball sub. It’s a handheld masterpiece perfect for lunch on the go.
  • Meatball Meze Platter: Want to get a bit more creative? Create a Mediterranean-inspired meze platter. Arrange your Zucchini and Turkey Meatballs alongside some tzatziki, hummus, olives, and warm pita bread. Let your taste buds embark on a flavor adventure as you dip and savor each bite. It’s a delightful spread for a casual gathering with friends.
  • Meatball-Stuffed Pita Pockets: For a quick and portable meal, stuff those meatballs into pita pockets with some shredded lettuce, diced cucumbers, and a dollop of creamy yogurt sauce. The combination of flavors and textures is like a Mediterranean fiesta in your mouth, perfect for a healthy and satisfying lunch.
  • Meatball Salad Sensation: If you’re craving something lighter, transform your meatballs into a zesty salad. Slice the meatballs into bite-sized pieces and toss them with a mix of fresh greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and a tangy vinaigrette. Top it off with crumbled feta cheese and a sprinkle of toasted pine nuts for that extra crunch. It’s a salad that packs a punch!

🏆 Expert Tips. What to Pay Attention To?

  • Spice It Up: Feel free to play with seasonings! Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a hint of heat, or experiment with your favorite herbs and spices. Fresh basil or oregano can elevate the flavor to new heights.
  • Gentle Mixing: When combining the ingredients, be gentle. Overmixing can result in tough meatballs. Use a light touch and blend until everything just comes together.
  • Perfect Portioning: To keep your meatballs uniform in size and cooking time, use a cookie scoop or your hands to portion out the mixture. Wet hands with a little water to prevent sticking while shaping.
  • Pan Choice Matters: Opt for a non-stick skillet or a well-seasoned cast-iron pan when cooking the meatballs. This helps prevent sticking and ensures a nice, even sear.
  • Don’t Crowd the Pan: Give your meatballs some breathing room in the pan. Crowding can lead to uneven cooking and steaming rather than browning. Cook in batches if needed.
  • Internal Temperature Check: For perfectly cooked meatballs, use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. They’re done when they reach 165°F (74°C). No one wants undercooked poultry!
  • Sauce Savvy: Choose your sauce wisely. Whether it’s a classic marinara or a creamy Alfredo, the right sauce can take your meatballs to the next level. Simmer them in the sauce for a few minutes to let the flavors meld together.
  • Make Ahead and Freeze: These meatballs freeze beautifully. Consider making a big batch and freezing some for later. Just pop them in a zip-top bag, and you’ve got a quick meal on standby.
  • Garnish Galore: Don’t forget the finishing touches! A sprinkle of fresh herbs, a drizzle of olive oil, or a dusting of Parmesan can elevate the visual appeal and taste of your dish.

🤔 Answering Your Questions:

Can I Use a Different Type of Ground Meat for This Recipe, Like Beef or Chicken?

Absolutely! You can substitute ground beef, ground chicken, or even a meat alternative like plant-based ground meat if you prefer. Keep in mind that the flavor and cooking time may vary slightly with different meats.

What’s the Ideal Size for Shaping the Meatballs?

Aim for golf ball-sized meatballs, which are usually around 1.5 inches (4 cm) in diameter. This size ensures even cooking and a perfect bite-sized portion.

How Do I Know When the Meatballs Are Cooked Through?

Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the meatballs. They’re done when they reach 165°F (74°C). Alternatively, you can cut one open to ensure there are no pink or raw areas inside.

Can I Freeze the Meatballs for Future Use?

Absolutely! These meatballs freeze wonderfully. After cooking, let them cool completely, then place them in an airtight container or a zip-top bag. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. Just thaw and reheat when needed.

What Type of Sauce Pairs Best With These Meatballs?

The choice of sauce is quite versatile. Classic marinara, creamy Alfredo, pesto, or even a lemon butter sauce all work wonderfully. Pick your favorite or try different ones to keep things exciting.
