🥘 Ingredients and Substitutes
- Pizza Dough: I used homemade pizza dough as the foundation of our delicious creation. It provides structure and texture, giving us that perfect crispy yet chewy base. If you don’t have pizza dough on hand, you can opt for store-bought pre-made dough or even use pre-made pizza crusts or flatbreads as a convenient alternative.
- Arrabbiata Sauce: This zesty, spicy tomato-based sauce adds a kick of flavor to our pizza. It’s traditionally made with garlic, tomatoes, red chili flakes, and herbs. If you can’t find Arrabbiata sauce, you can substitute it with marinara sauce or any tomato-based pasta sauce. To add a spicy element, you can mix in some red chili flakes or hot sauce.
- Canned Beans: Ah, the star ingredient! Canned beans, such as kidney beans or cannellini beans, add a delightful heartiness and protein boost to our pizza. They bring a unique twist to the traditional pizza experience. However, if you don’t have canned beans, you can explore other legumes like chickpeas or even lentils as a substitute.
- Mozzarella Cheese: This gooey, melty cheese is the crowning glory of our pizza. It provides that comforting, stringy goodness that we all love. Mozzarella cheese is the go-to choice, but you can experiment with other types of cheese or even a cheese blend for added flavor. A few options I can recommend are Cheddar cheese, Monterey Jack cheese, provolone cheese, or a combination of different cheeses for a unique twist.
Quick Note: Experimenting with substitutes allows you to personalize the recipe according to your taste preferences and the ingredients you have on hand. So have fun exploring these alternatives while creating your scrumptious 4 ingredient baked bean pizza!
🍴 Tools Needed:
- Parchment Paper
- Baking tray
👩🍳 Step-by-step Directions
As I said earlier, I used homemade pizza dough but if you will use store-bought bring it to room temperature so you can work with it.
When the dough has risen well, cut a piece of parchment paper that fits your baking tray.
Meanwhile, place the baking tray in the oven on the lowest rack and preheat the oven to the maximum temperature.
While the oven is preheating, we’ll prepare the pizza.
Place the dough on the previously prepared parchment paper, drizzle the dough with a little olive oil to prevent sticking, and add an extra flavor and taste.
Using your fingers, stretch the dough on the parchment paper, giving it a round shape while leaving slightly thicker edges to form the crust.
Then, spread the sauce evenly over the crust, making sure not to cover the edges. Once the sauce is evenly distributed, place the beans in a uniform layer over the entire surface.
Carefully transfer the parchment paper with the pizza onto the preheated baking tray in the oven, and place it on the same rack level.
Allow it to bake at the maximum temperature of your oven until the crust is golden brown and well-cooked.
When the crust is ready, it’s time to add the cheese on top of the pizza. Return the pizza to the oven for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese melts and becomes gooey and bubbly.
If you prefer the cheese to be well-browned, you can add the cheese at the initial stage when you add the rest of the toppings.
However, if you prefer the cheese to be only melted, in order to maintain its creamy texture, you can add it towards the end of the baking time.
As soon as the cheese has melted, you can remove the pizza from the oven and serve it immediately while it’s hot.
The crust will be crispy, and the cheese will be creamy and easy to spread. Enjoy!
Even though this pizza doesn’t have meat, it is still satisfying and has a rich and balanced flavor, thanks to the beans.
🍽️ Serving Suggestions
- Embrace the summer vibes by serving your piping-hot pizza with a side of vibrant, crisp salad. Toss together a medley of mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, and thinly sliced red onions. Drizzle with a tangy vinaigrette made with lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, a pinch of salt, and a sprinkle of dried oregano. This refreshing salad will provide a lovely contrast to the warm, cheesy slices of pizza.
- Elevate your pizza party by preparing a mouthwatering bruschetta platter. Toast some slices of crusty Italian bread, rub them with a garlic clove, and top them with diced ripe tomatoes, fresh basil leaves, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Arrange these delectable bites alongside your baked bean pizza, allowing your guests to indulge in the perfect combination of flavors.
- Take your pizza soirée to the next level with a tantalizing antipasto spread. Arrange an assortment of cured meats, such as prosciutto, salami, and mortadella, along with a variety of cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorino Romano, and aged provolone. Add a burst of freshness with marinated olives, roasted red peppers, and artichoke hearts. Don’t forget to include a basket of crusty bread or grissini for the ultimate Italian feast.
- For a wholesome and hearty accompaniment to your pizza, roast a medley of seasonal vegetables. Toss together sliced bell peppers, zucchini, eggplant, red onions, and cherry tomatoes with olive oil, salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of dried herbs like thyme or rosemary. Roast until tender and caramelized, serving them alongside your baked bean pizza for a symphony of flavors and textures.
- Enhance the indulgence of your pizza gathering with a selection of creamy dips and spreads. Prepare a classic hummus with chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and a drizzle of olive oil. Or whip up a tangy and herbaceous white bean dip by blending cannellini beans, garlic, fresh herbs like parsley and basil, lemon zest, and a splash of balsamic vinegar. Serve these delightful dips with warm pita bread, breadsticks, or crunchy vegetable crudités for a truly satisfying feast.
🏆 Expert Tips. What to Pay Attention To?
- Quality Ingredients: Remember, my friends, the magic of a great pizza lies in its ingredients. Opt for high-quality pizza dough, whether you make it from scratch or go for a pre-made option. Seek out flavorful Arrabbiata sauce that packs a punch, canned beans that are tender and tasty, and fresh mozzarella cheese that melts like a dream. Quality ingredients will elevate your pizza from good to “molto buono!”
- Proper Dough Handling: When working with pizza dough, let’s treat it with care. Allow it to come to room temperature before stretching it out to ensure it’s pliable and easy to work with. Gently stretch the dough using your fingertips, gradually working from the center outwards. Take your time and let the dough relax if it starts to resist. Trust me, a little patience goes a long way in creating a perfect crust.
- Sauce and Cheese Distribution: Evenly spreading the Arrabbiata sauce and cheese is key to achieving pizza harmony. Use the back of a spoon to spread the sauce in a thin layer, leaving a small border around the edges for that coveted crispy crust. When it comes to cheese, distribute it generously, ensuring it reaches every nook and cranny. Don’t be shy! A cheesy bite in every mouthful is what we’re after.
- Bake to Perfection: Preheat that oven, my fellow pizza enthusiasts, and let it reach its optimal temperature. Slide your pizza onto a preheated baking stone or a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake it until the crust turns golden and crispy, and the cheese is gloriously melted and bubbling. Keep an eye on your masterpiece to prevent any over- or undercooking. Remember, each oven has its personality, so trust your senses and adapt accordingly.
- Flavorful Finishing Touches: As your pizza emerges from the oven, give it a little extra love with some flavorful finishing touches. A drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of fresh herbs like basil or oregano, or a pinch of red pepper flakes will elevate the taste and add that final touch of pizzazz. Don’t be afraid to experiment with additional toppings or a squeeze of lemon juice for a citrusy kick. This is your pizza, and it should reflect your unique taste preferences!
🤔 Answering Your Questions:
Can I Use a Different Type of Sauce Instead of Arrabbiata Sauce?
Yes, you can! Arrabbiata sauce adds a spicy kick, but if you prefer a milder flavor, feel free to substitute it with marinara sauce or any other tomato-based pasta sauce of your choice. Adjust the level of spiciness by adding red chili flakes or hot sauce, if desired.
Can I Use Different Types of Canned Beans?
Absolutely! While the recipe suggests using canned beans like kidney beans or cannellini beans, you can switch them up based on your preferences. Chickpeas, black beans, or even cooked and seasoned lentils can be delightful substitutes. Feel free to explore and find your favorite bean variety for this pizza.
How Do I Ensure a Crispy Crust?
To achieve a crispy crust, preheat your oven to a high temperature (around 450°F or 230°C) and make sure it’s fully preheated before placing the pizza inside. Additionally, using a pizza stone or preheated baking sheet can help crisp up the crust. For an extra crispy touch, brush the edges of the crust with olive oil before baking.
Can I Make the Pizza Ahead of Time and Reheat It Later?
While it’s best to enjoy pizza fresh out of the oven, you can certainly make it ahead of time and reheat it. Allow the pizza to cool completely, then wrap it tightly in foil or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat, place the pizza in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-15 minutes or until heated through.
