A simple and delicious one-pan recipe of homemade Sicilian Sausages with beans made using tomatoes, chopped onions, celery, garlic, and hot pepper. An easy recipe that you can make in just one pan or you can use your slow cooker for that. An ideal midweek meal when you have a lot to do in your house and you look for something that will need your minimum attention.
This recipe is so easy to put together. Also, is very versatile. You can replace the ingredients as you want. Don’t like celery? You can add more chopped onions instead to the pan. Also, you can add to this recipe chopped carrots or parsnips. If you don’t like the beans, you can replace them with chickpeas or lentils.
Also, in the end, you can add some fresh chopped parsley, cilantro, or chopped spring onions to your plate. This will give you an addition of color and taste to the plate.
You can serve these Sicilian sausages near some crusty bread slices, near traditional Focaccia Genovese, or near a salad if you plan to make this dish in the warm period of the year.
For this recipe, I made my own Homemade Sicilian Sausages, but of course, you can use any commercial sausages that you will find at your supermarket.
If you have some time, I highly encourage you to make your own homemade sausages and keep them in your freezer. They can get handy from time to time.
What Ingredients you will need:
- 2 Cups of Canned Red Beans. If you want, you can use only one type of beans.
- 2 Cups of Canned White Beans.
- 7-8 Sausages. I served 2 sausages per person.
- 2 Cups of Tomato Sauce.
- 1 Cup of Water.
- 1 Medium Onion.
- 2 garlic cloves.
- 1 Celery.
- Chili Pepper.
- Salt and pepper to taste.
How to Make Sicilian Sausages with Beans?
Set the High temperature (300°F / 150°C) on the slow cooker. Pour the olive oil into the pan and brown the Sausages for approximately 2 and a half minutes on each side.
Quick Note: Please keep in mind that not all slow cookers are created and are working equally. Because of that, please verify the food from time to time and if is needed, adjust the temperature and cooking time.
Our purpose is to caramelize the sausages in the exterior, to give them a slight crust. This will help us to keep the juice inside and to obtain a more intense taste for the sausages.
You should get a similar result:
Remove the sausages from the slow cooker and place them on a plate until we will cook the rest of the ingredients.
After that, in the oil in which we just fried the sausages, add over chopped onions, celery, garlic, and hot pepper. Brown all the vegetables for about 5 minutes.
Quick Note: If you don’t like some of the vegetables that I used in this recipe – you can omit them or replace them with what you like more.
If you want to add more vegetables, at this stage, you can add carrots, bell peppers, celery roots, or parsnips.
After that, pour the tomato sauce over our vegetables and let them cook for about 10 minutes.
Add the canned beans (I used 2 cups of canned white beans and 2 cups of canned red beans, just to ger a richer color palette into the plate. You can use only one type of beans).
Right after the beans, add a glass of water, a pinch of salt and black pepper.
Mix well all the ingredients and taste if need to adjust the salt and pepper to your taste.
Now, it’s time to return the sausages back to the slow cooker over our “vegetable stew”. Select the “Low temperature” mode, or set it manually the temperature to 195°F / 90°C. Let the sausages cook for about two hours.
Quick Note: Our goal is to bring the inside temperature of the sausages to 175°F / 80°C. At this temperature, the sausages will be cooked well and they will remain juicy.
That’s all! Enjoy your juicy and delicious homemade Sicilian Sausages with Beans.
